Why Does God Let Terrible Things Happen?
Last night, at 11:18 pm EST, during a commercial break on The Daily Show (Comedy Central, Channel 45 on Time Warner Cable in New York), this

through no fault of my own, appeared on my television screen.

I am — well, let’s just say lots of years old. I have seen quite a few bad commercials for terrible movies (among other things) in my time. But this is literally the first time in my life that I have ever found myself sitting alone in my living room, blank-faced with horror and revulsion, thinking “oh my God, this is unquestionably the worst, most appalling thing ever committed to celluloid.” I mean, think about it. Trailers usually contain the best parts of the movie; if this is the best, what must the rest of it look like?

Truly, I felt a sense of unimaginable resentment, anger and bewilderment just watching the damn thing for two minutes. And I don’t even have any particular problem with Mike Meyers. This is just … oh, my sweet lord. Somebody tell me, am I wrong? Am I over-reacting? Holy jiminy crickets. What are we to make of this?

No. No, you are not over-reacting.

I remember a recent "This American Life" where Ira Glass made the point that due to people nowadays having so many more entertainment options than they used to, thanks in part of the Internet, traditional media outlets have more competition than they have ever had, and must try new and innovative things in order to keep the audience's attention. It's an interesting point, really -- after all, why would you watch "America's Funniest Home Videos" when you could just load up the YouTube and watch that ATF agent shoot himself in the foot in front of a classroom full of children?

But I don't believe the evidence is on his side.

I can't get the Utube at work, but I suspect this is The Love Guru.

Y'know what's really sad? Mike Myers spent three years workshopping and writing to get that film.

I can accept even lowbrow humor can involve major work - it took some research to get the feel of 60s B-movies in Powers.

But if you are going to expend that sort of time, why not go completely over the top and spend a year in India - making Bollywood movies perhaps - and find some real texture for such a simple joke character? A film informed by that would be awesome, but I really really doubt it is.

Damn, you're a good guesser.

And from the trailers, I can't believe anyone actually wrote this thing. To me it looks like Meyers had a balloon payment coming up and it was like, hey, look! Here's some film and some drapes. Let's make a movie or something.
